The walk hadn't calmed Anakin down in the slightest. Merely thinking of leaving the order hurt to think about, it was his life, more than that he needed Obi-Wan at his side. He didn't care if he was being selfish anymore. What was wrong with wanting it all? A place in the order, a child, a beautiful wife and a handsome...what would Obi-Wan be if he said yes to them? A lover yes but would he say yes if they proposed at some point? A husband...Anakin like the sound of that.
It was a fantasy he couldn't see coming true of them continuing to work together and coming home to Padme. The baby would have three doting parents. Padme, Obi-Wan and him would make love until they were all physically exhausted. More than that wistful dream...Anakin wanted to hear Obi-Wan say he loved him. Hearing them, knowing Obi-Wan felt the same...he wanted that more than his next breath.
Neither man said much once he arrived back at the apartment. Obi-Wan murmured that Padme had gone to the senate and wanted to talk when she got back. They sat in silence for a bit too long making Anakin wonder if something happened when he was gone. The cheerfulness had gone out of Obi-Wan making him miss the way his masters' mood lit up the whole room. Did Padme and him argue? They usually got along. Maybe the stress from planning was getting to him? Unprompted Anakin walked around the sofa to massage Obi-Wans' tense muscles. It took a moment for him to relax enough--Anakin knew he couldn't do this as well with his prostatic hand--to let his former Padawan help soothe him.
A beep from Obi-Wans' communicator made Anakin curse drawing a chuckle from the older man.
"Obi-Wan meet us at the Chancellor Palpatines' office! We need as many masters as we can gather!" Mace Windu ordered.
Anakin and Obi-Wans' eyes met as they both thought of Padme. "We're on our way!'
"Just Jedi Masters, leave Skywalker !"
"That's not an option!" There was no way Anakin would sit behind while he wife was endangered. -----
The first thing Padme heard when she stepped out of the elevator was a scream. She stilled as the telltale hum of lightsabers clashed not too far away. Down the hallway she could see a body lying on the floor and on instinct she rushed back to the lift. The doors wouldn't open and there wasn't any other exit she could access without trending into what sounded like a war.
Another being cried out as they were cut down, she caught sight of Master Windu, Kit Fisto and--the Chancellor?! Horror spread through her as Padme realized what this meant. All this time Palpatine was the Sith Lord, the master, the Jedi had been looking for ever since Naboo fought against the Trade Federation. She felt sick, the blaster she kept on her would be useless against him. If the Jedi failed she would be trapped with a Sith Master--her baby was in danger!
As if hearing her thoughts Palpatine cut through Master Fisto leaving her fate up to Mace Windu. Their lethal dance sent glass shards flying as the window shattered. The Jedi master yelled something out that was lost among the wind and traffic sounds. The elevator dinged to announce a new presence, neither Jedi or Sith glanced towards it as the doors opened. Obi-Wan was out first his eyes falling on her before looking on the scene in the Chancellors' office.
"Skywalker, I told you to stay behind!" Windu bellowed.
"You see how he distrusts you?! The Jedi will never be there for you or your wife, Anakin."
Padme looked away from Palpatine as he hissed like an animal. Next to her Obi-Wan tried to work the elevator to get her out only to discover it was set to go one way, up. It could be fixed though he doubted they would be given the chance to escape.
"Wife?!"
"You didn't know Skywalker was married to the senator?" The vile smile Palpatine gave made Padmes' skin crawl. "You are the father of the baby, aren't you Anakin? I'd hate to think the reports of Master Kenobi and her being true."
"Enough! That will be dealt with later. You're sentenced to death for your crimes against the Republic!"
"What--shouldn't he get a trial--?" Despite everything that (man?) thing did Padme still felt compelled to ask.
"He owns the courts! He's too dangerous to live!" The purple blade shook as blue lightning shot out of Palpatines' hands. They seemed to be at an odd stalemate with Palpatine willing to take the damage to his own face to keep the killing blow from landing.
"Think of the power that could be yours Anakin! Without the Jedi you could be free to be with the woman you love! Do you think they'd allow you to stay in their ranks now that they know?!"
Anakin wavered.
"Don't listen to him! He's trying to tempt you!" Obi-Wan shouted.
"He's not denying it! You'll lose everything!"
"You'll be as expendable as his other apprentices !" Anakins' master cried out.
Hissing Palpatine rose up throwing Windu against the far wall then directed his rage towards Obi-Wan. Anakin deflected most of it as the other Jedi blocked the rest to protect Padme. "You'd trust him with your wife?!"
"Yes! I love them both!"
"You love Kenobi?! More than you love your wife?" Palpatine cackled.
"No, the same."
"W-What?" Obi-Wan sputtered.
The declaration of love drew similar looks of confusion from Obi-Wan and Palpatine. For an odd moment the Sith Lord even looked at the Jedi as if he was silently asking him where that had come from. In a strange way it pleased Obi-Wan to know he wasn't the only one that Anakin confused.
Sparks flew over the room, blades crossed and Obi-Wan kept Padme safe as debris flew into the air. When Anakin struck the killing blow he only had a moment to tell Anakin to run before the room exposed. Bracing his body over Padme he took the impact and the last thing he heard were two voices yelling his name.
