In the ROTS novel Palpatine makes the choice about Anakin turning not so much about dark vs. light but who Anakin loves more. Padme or Obi-Wan. In this version Anakin is shocked to realize he loves Obi-Wan more and if he choose Padme he'll lose them both. Palpatine REALLY misjudged the situation which doesn't turn out so well for him. Awkwardness ensues when Padme and Obi-Wan find out the truth. More so when the council thinks Anakin needs to strength his bond to Obi-Wan to prevent more temptation from the darkside.
